What Is Shoulder Pain?

If you’re dealing with shoulder pain, you probably already know how frustrating it can be, because you use your shoulder for almost everything.

Shoulder pain can come from a number of different things:

Sometimes there’s a very clear event that starts it. It could be a fall, lifting something too heavy, playing a sport, or too much repetitive overhead movement like painting. Other times, it comes out of nowhere.

What are the symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

You might have pain when:

And sometimes it’s not even the pain that’s the biggest problem. It’s the weakness and the loss of motion that comes with it.

Shoulder pain can make everyday things surprisingly difficult. You can’t sleep comfortably because you can’t lay on that side. You stop lifting weights because you’re afraid you’re going to make it worse. Maybe you play golf or tennis, and your shoulder has you thinking twice about going out to play.

One of the biggest things we hear is, “I just don’t want my shoulder to hurt anymore.” That loss of confidence can be just as limiting as the pain itself.

Most people try to manage it on their own for a while. Maybe you rest it, take some medication, put ice on it, start stretching, or find some rotator cuff exercises online. Sometimes that works, but the shoulder is complicated, and the same exercises that help one person can irritate another person’s shoulder.

And if you’ve been told you have a rotator cuff tear or arthritis, it’s easy to assume that means you have to live with the problem or eventually need surgery. But that’s not always the case.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Shoulder Pain?

Our approach starts with figuring out what’s actually happening. We’ll look at:

Then we’ll explain what we’re seeing and what we think needs to be addressed.

We’ll use hands-on treatment when it’s appropriate to improve mobility and reduce pain. But we’ll also progressively strengthen your shoulder so it becomes more capable. We want you to trust it again, whether that’s reaching overhead, sleeping comfortably, getting back to the gym, playing golf, or simply doing everyday activities without thinking about your shoulder.

Our goal isn’t just to treat your pain. It’s to help you understand what’s going on, get you moving better, and give you the tools to take an active role in your health. We want you to leave physical therapy feeling stronger, more confident, and more capable than when you came in.
