What Is Neck Pain?

If your neck has been bothering you, you know how difficult it can be to ignore.

Neck pain can come from:

Sometimes it starts after an obvious injury like a car accident or sports injury. Other times, it builds up gradually, and you may not even be able to pinpoint when it began.

What are the symptoms of Neck Pain?

You might notice:

Neck pain can affect almost every part of your day. You wake up stiff. You turn your whole body instead of turning your head when you’re driving. You can’t get comfortable at night. You’re sitting at your desk at work, constantly shifting positions because your neck is bothering you. And if headaches are part of the problem, that can make things even more difficult.

It’s frustrating because you may not realize how often you move your neck until it hurts.

A lot of people try to manage neck pain themselves. Heat, ice, medication, stretching, massage, changing pillows, and some of those things can certainly help. But if the underlying issue isn’t addressed, the symptoms often keep coming back. You might get temporary relief from stretching or massage, only to find yourself dealing with the same problem a few weeks later.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Neck Pain?

At Altamont Physical Therapy, we start by figuring out what’s actually contributing to your neck pain. We’ll look at:

Then we’ll explain what we’re finding and what we think is driving the problem.

Treatment may include hands-on techniques to improve your mobility and decrease symptoms, along with exercises designed specifically for you.

And one of the most important things we can teach you is what you can do for yourself, because our goal isn’t to have you come to physical therapy every time your neck gets tight. We want you to understand your body well enough that you can take an active role in keeping yourself healthy.

At the end of the day, our goal isn’t just to treat your pain. It’s to help you understand what’s going on, get you moving better, and give you the tools to stay that way. We want you to leave physical therapy feeling stronger, more confident, and more capable than when you came in.
